The Best of VIDEOGUD

Home Styling, Magdalena Ljung

Upplev videokonst digitalt!

PRESS RELEASE (IN ENGLISH)

Luleå Biennial 2020: Time on Earth
21.11 2020~14.2 2021

The Luleå Biennal is an international biennial for contemporary art situated in Norrbotten, the northernmost region in Sweden. In the exhibitions global and hyperlocal perspectives meet. In addition to about a dozen exhibitions spread across the entire region, the 2020 edition will also include a program related to literature, drama and choreography, as well as an online journal.

The 2020 Luleå Biennial takes hold of the speculative question what ’realism’, as notion, artistic expression and paradigm, could mean today. Through their work, the invited artists tell us of realities relating to societal systems: bureaucracy, logics of the mass media, and industrial infrastructure; but they also suggest means of disruption that could challenge and invalidate the current order: the strike, magic and not least art itself.

In a time marked by crisis, what does the allegation that a desire for a different, more equal reality is ’unrealistic’? Art makes reality visible to us, it subverts our way of thinking. It enables the possibility of reinventing what is realistic.

In collaboration with Sweden’s Public Art Agency and the curator Edi Muka, the biennial presents Woven Songs, a series of existing and newly commissioned works that are integrated into the exhibitions or appear in public spaces in Norrbotten.

Participating artists: Dimen Abdulla, Linnea Axelsson, Chto Delat?, Elisabete Finger & Manuela Eichner, Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze, Aage Gaup, Beatrice Gibson, Apostolos Georgiou, Maria W Horn, Thomas Hämén, Susanna Jablonski, Ingela Johansson, Kapwani Kiwanga, Birgitta Linhart, Hanna Ljungh, Michele Masucci & Karl Sjölund, Fathia Mohidin, Santiago Mostyn, Christian Nyampeta, Ingrid Ogenstedt, Didem Pekün with KHORA, Charlotte Posenenske, Sofia Restorp, Iris Smeds, Augusta Strömberg, Cara Tolmie, Isak Sundström, Erik Thörnqvist, Tommy Tommie, Danae Valenza, Ana Vaz, Mats Wikström, Peter Weiss & Hans Nordenström, Måns Wrange, Markus Öhrn & David Väyrynen.

Curators: Karin Bähler Lavér, Emily Fahlén, and Asrin Haidari.

Venues: Luleå Art Center, the former prison Vita Duvan, Luleå University of Technology, the Storforsen waterfall, the Museum of Norrbotten, Galleri Syster, Havremagasinet Regional Art Center in Boden, the Arjeplog Silver Museum, Välkomma High School in Malmberget, and the Korpilombolo Night Festival.

The Luleå biennial is a project by Konstfrämjandet. With generous support from the Luleå Municipality, Region Norrbotten, The Swedish Arts Council, Nordic Culture Fund, Sparbanken Nord, SAHA Association Turkey.

Opening weekend Thursday November 19–Sunday November 22. Official inauguration in Luleå Saturday 21 November. RSVP: osa@luleabiennial.se

Filmform 70 år: Rekonstruerat filmprogram från 1950

Installationsbild: utställningen Viking Eggeling 1950 på Nationalmuseum. Foto ur Nationalmuseums arkiv

Curator statement:

This programme reflects the many ways voice is used in the broad range of artists moving images contained within the Filmform collection. Glo-babel by Olle Hedman acts as a starting point in its exploration of colleague Åke Karlung and his Tower of Babel constructed at Moderna Museet, Stockholm back in 1977. The film looks at the implications caused by globalization and the ever-growing hegemony of American pop culture. Confusion and overlapping of spoken languages are then brought forward in the early video work Overflow Indications by Teresa Wennberg. A silly fight proceeds in a gallery space as a voice reading complex art theory shifts between different languages and modes of speech. The programme continues by investigating how the voice can be used as a rhythmic tool, an instrument of sorts. In Gunvor Nelson’s iconic work, MY NAME IS OONA, the recurring voice of a child becomes a strong manifestation of identity. Rhythmical aspects are further highlighted in Andreas Gedin’s contest Christophe & Christophe where two men sharing the same name are asked to come up with a new word every second, led by a metronome.

What remains when the voice is absent, or a language is transferred to a different cultural sphere from where it originally belongs? The question is brought to the fore in the second phase of the programme. No Time to Fall by Maria Friberg is made up by all the time George W Bush pauses and hesitates during the State of the Union speech following his inauguration. In Saskia Holmkvist’s meta layered interview featuring herself, neoliberal media strategies are exposed in bright daylight. In this prevailing order only symbols and performance matters, not actual content. With the use of Finnish male choir Välimiehet, singing Annie Lennox classic pop song, Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves, artists Timo Menke and Nils Agdler reflect changes in gender roles and masculinity. Marit Lindberg’s brief Practical Chinese reveals how the Chinese word shí shí generates completely different meaning by slightly shifting the pronunciation. In the final work, we return to the start and the artist Åke Karlung. His newly restored Homo Ludens tells the tale of the playing man using text, animated images and distorted language. What appears to be a Western fiction develops into a cacophonic ride through human development and oppression, firmly led by the evolving voice of the artist.

Combined digital & physical screening on October 14th, 7PM CEST

In the third part of FILMFORM RE:VIEW this fall we find the curator, art critic and editor Power Ekroth. With the emerging presidential election in the U.S. and surreal feelings towards the current state of affairs as her starting point, Ekroth has found works that both reflects these notions of unease and offers methods of resistance.

This programme is shown as a physical screening at Filmform on Svarvargatan 2 (Stockholm, Sweden) and simultaneously live streamed at the Filmform website.

Livestream here on October 14th at 7PM (CEST)

About four years ago, just after the last presidential election in the USA, I had to press pause on my intake of world news. I felt unable to cope with things as they were as I failed to see how I could make a change. How to re-organize within this particularly warped structure that we live in?

Four years later, I am again following the news-feed, however the question still remains. The notion of “plus ça change…” (the more things change, the more they stay the same) lingers, which has affected the selection of the films from the Filmform archive. The program proposes a reflection of a tangible system to which there might be a possibility of modifications.

The starting point is the legendary Kjartan Slettemark, who undoubtedly would have done a brilliant “sewage treatment”/exorcism with the current president of the USA. The program continues through commentaries of the various state of affairs, and arrive at Hanni Kamaly and Åsa Sjöström’s investigations of dehumanization in various categories, before Anna-Karin Rasmusson (dis)organize the internal archive for us at the very end. At the Filmform space, Runo Lagamarsino’s protester runs as a backdrop continuously.

Smashed to pieces in the still of the night

“Are you watching WWE Raw?”, he says, sitting down next to me on his couch. “It’s so stupid”, he continues, while jerking his head.

I know it isn’t. And I know it’s only stupid in the context of us. At night sometimes, I’m struck by the urge to film him sleeping with my phone, just to savour the moment of it having happened. That we were once this close. And that I got to watch the ebb and flow of his body breathing in the dark.

Smashed to pieces (in the still of night) reads Lawrence Weiner’s work towering over the city which I’ve come to love. A city where I was a night nurse and merely a visitor, and he always the host. Weiner’s words always used to appear emblematic of us, until his work no longer was and one day ceased from its ground.

Smashed to pieces in the still of the night is a film program curated by C-print which retells in fragments a personal story about lust, struggle, perversion and alienation, by way of the prior storytelling of others. A story which recalls memories from a foreign city in which you loved yourself and the crisp nocturnal air.

– Ashik Zaman & Koshik Zaman

C-print started as a non-commercial initiative with the objective to highlight a diversity in artistic expression. While the online journal about contemporary art remains the core of the project, C-print has over time evolved into a curatorial platform, carrying out exhibitions and programming.

This year, Filmform (est. 1950) celebrates the organization’s 70th anniversary with a symposium on the distribution of artists’ moving images. Filmform has invited representatives from AV-arkki, LIMA and Video Data Bank (VDB) which together with Filmform represent members of the DINAMO network (Distribution Network of Artists’ Moving Image Organizations) – an international coalition for distribution organizations supporting and promoting artist’s moving images. The network meets regularly to share new experiences and to discuss challenges with distribution, such as the growing threats faced by the cultural policies of the far-right, preservation issues, protection of immaterial rights and artists’ right to economic compensation.

Although part of the same network, these three organizations’ focus and work methods vary. By inviting these three sister organizations to participate in a joint symposium, Filmform wants to shed light on common grounds and at the same time, highlight AV-arkki, LIMA and VDB as particularly interesting examples of how distribution can be handled through different working methods. The talks will be centered around the distribution of artists’ moving images in general: a field where art and film overlap. Where different traditions clash or merge, with all the complications and possibilities that come out of this intersection.

Schedule:
14:00 Anna-Karin Larsson, director of Filmform

14.15 Hanna Maria Anttila, director of AV-arkki and Tytti Rantanen, programme coordinator, AV-arkki

14.45 Gaby Wijers, director of LIMA

15.15 Intermission

15.30 Rachel Somers Miles, researcher at LIMA

16.00 Lauren Pirritano, media producer at VDB

16.30 General discussion

The symposium is arranged in collaboration with Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation and IASPIS, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee´s International Programme for Visual and Applied Artists. Filmform is supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Arts Grants Committee and the Swedish Arts Council.

For Leaking Container, Filmform have also made it possible to delve into the Index Film Archive, which will be reinstated in Index Lounge as part of the festival program during 17–19 September in Index Lounge. Guests will be able to browse the archive, select films to watch and immerse themselves in the revived historical situation of Index Lounge – a previous format which originally existed at galleri Index at S:t Paulsgatan.

Each of the three days has two sessions, 14:00-17:00 and 17:00-21:00. To join, it is necessary to RSVP by emailing rsvp@indexfoundation.se and stating which day(s) and which session(s) you would like to join. Shadows Closing in

In this film programme, shadows play the main part. Here they symbolize both the shadow position as defined by society and an activity that of its own accord draws away from the light; in a film censured by the state, in an animated blackout of a postcard view of Stockholm, and the homeless cat colonies in Istanbul’s interspaces. The works take form in the contrast between visibility and invisibility, in censorship, and the difference of those voluntarily elusive.

– Emily Fahlén & Asrin Haidari

Mint is a curatorial duo, a mobile exhibition project, and an art space initiated by Emily Fahlén and Asrin Haidari. They work with a special interest in radical art production, 0intergenerational meetings, and site-specific interventions. During spring 2019 they inaugurated the new art space Mint, located in the Workers’ Educational Association in Stockholm. Fahlén and Haidari are also the artistic directors for the Luleå Biennial 2018–2020.

The 66th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen goes Online

The global spread of coronavirus calls for joint action. Our Festival, too, is among those that cannot take part as planned, due to a decree issued by the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs (MAGS) in North Rhine-Westphalia. But we believe that cultural offers should be maintained despite or rather especially in such a crisis and are working on an alternative online version.

We expect that a festival pass will be on sale from mid-April. Please find further information about our decision here (LINK).

We are currently planning to present our competition programmes and a number of additional programmes online, comprising an estimated number of 200 to 300 films. Please understand that at this point in time we are still working on the details. We will keep you updated via our website and our Social Media channels.utm_campaign=Nyhetsbrev+Filmklubben+11-4-2020&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Lime+Newsletter

Videovandring – Tjaukle – Erosion

My Darling Quarantine presents Ottica Zero

Press release – My Darling Quarantine

In light of the current COVID-19 situation that is unfolding across the world, we have witnessed many great cultural events being cancelled or postponed to the second half of the year. Yes, we are already looking forward to some extensive simultaneous festival hopping in the near future, but we don’t want to sit still until that happens and will keep spreading the short film love much quicker than any virus.

Thus, we proudly present the first – and hopefully only – edition of the My Darling Quarantine Short Film Festival!

Every week Talking Shorts will present an online programme of seven short films on the subject of “dystopia” that have been suggested from our quarantined short film friends around the globe. The audience can then vote for their favourite film.

But there is more to it than just a fun game. COVID-19 affects everybody. However, some less fortunate people are affected more than others. Thus, we want to support those in need and set up a GoFundMe page where you can support the following two causes:

— Medecins Sans Frontiers is currently working hard to avoid a major COVID-19 outbreak among the 42,000 asylum seekers trapped on the Greek islands. Furthermore, they are supporting people worldwide that have no access to a functioning health system and need help and support to deal with the outbreak. We want to donate 50% of the proceeds to that cause.

— Cultural institutions and workers, especially those who work freelance and receive no institutional funding, are facing a time of crisis. Public life is coming to a stand-still, places are shutting down and people are losing their jobs. We want to donate the other 50% to those in culture that are most affected, decided together by all the initiatives, programmers and festivals that are taking part in the online event.

Walden visar: Jan Bark

Spindrift, Jan Bark & Erki Kurenniemi

London Short Film Festival screens KIRSA NICHOLINA

KIRSA NICHOLINA, Gunvor Nelson

KIRSA NICHOLINA by Gunvor Nelson will be screened in the programme Flesh and Fluids at London Short Film Festival held in Institute of Contemporary Art, London on January 17th. The programme is curated by Tom Grimshaw.

London Short Film Festival 2020

Through the work of four artist-filmmakers, London Short Film Festival takes a long and unflinching look at the human body. This programme strips away euphemistic aesthetics and metaphors to focus on the corporeal and biological – beginning with Gunvor Nelson’s portrait of a home birth and

culminating with Stan Brakhage’s shocking yet humane study of an autopsy (described by Jonathan Rosenbaum as ‘one of the most direct confrontations with death ever recorded on film’). Also featuring visionary feminist performance artist Carolee Schneemann’s Fuses from 1967.

Programme

Kirsa Nicholina, dir. Gunvor Nelson, Sweden 1969, 16 min.
Fuses, dir. Carolee Schneemann, USA 1967, 23 min.
Steifheit 1-3/7, dir. Albert Stakl, Austria 2018, 9 min.
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes, dir. Stan Brakhage, USA 1971, 32 min.

Note:

Fuses, Steifheit 1-3/7 and The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes are silent and will be presented from 35mm and 16mm prints.

This programme contains unsimulated sex, and real birth and autopsy footage.
All films are ad-free and 18+ unless otherwise stated. Groups are advised to arrive early as seating is unallocated.
