Kvarteret Ortdrivaren
BY
Liselotte Wajstedt

Kiruna is one of the few cities in the world that is entirely planned and designed from its inception. Kvarteret Ortdrivaren focuses on the modernist architectural work of the Ralph Erskine-designed area of the city called ‘Kvarteret Ortdrivaren’ and how the overall vision shaped the neighborhood’s four buildings.

Situated directly opposite the LKAB site, these buildings are intimately connected with the history of mining in Kiruna. Wajstedt has interviewed the people who live in the buildings, following the lives of three older ladies. They are all upset and saddened by having to vacate their homes, as many of the residents have lived there since the 1960’s. In this film, Wajstedt reflect on the meaning of home, on the histories of embodied experiences in lived-in spaces, and what losing one’s home may ultimately do to individuals and communities.
