AWAKENING FILM (WILL NEVER HAPPEN)
BY
Leif Holmstrand

“Awakening Film (Will Never Happen)” was filmed in the Malmö cinema Panora back in 2019 and was edited and completed during spring 2020. The material is a ritualistic, three day long, art performance during the Fish Tank exhibition, and the editing is somewhat inspired by old film fragments portraying Tatsumi Hijikata’s dark butoh performances, and sound is very important in this piece. The sibling of this film is “Awakening Film (First Square)” which is differently cut and proportioned, black and white, no sound. A dark figure builds and deconstructs something, using a lot of materials, a lot of string, yarn, tape et cetera. Time goes backwards and forwards.

About the artist

Leif Holmstrand

Leif Holmstrand (born 1972, living in Malmö) is a Swedish poet, novelist, artist and musician of non-straight, psychedelic, queer heritage, with a great interest in archaic means of expression and classical ways of composing, structuring, rhythmization. The poetry book “Inte världen / Not the World” (Albert Bonniers Förlag, 2022) lingers in the field where the physical universe overlaps the senses, at the very borders of personality and perception, and deals with the constant process of dying — and growing, changing, giving different kinds of births. This is also very true when it comes to their art and film production.
