Noventa y Tres
BY
Juan-Pedro Fabra Guemberena

Noventa y Tres slides between reality and fiction; proceeding from a terrorist act aboard an airplane, it is reminiscent of a predictable Hollywood drama of the 9/11 tragedy. The scene is soon punctuated with scenes of Superman in flight and seminude flight attendants—one sloppily seducing the pilot. This video reminds one of the unavoidable impact America’s haunted political climate and excessive entertainment industry have had on the collective consciousness.

Appropriated material of different enactments of situations, psychologically charged by violence, sex or terror on flights, collected from a wide variety of films; commercials, home-videos, porn-flicks etc., are the raw-material used for the video-collage Noventa y tres. Clips from high-end and super aesthetically chiselled Hollywood motion pictures and so called “drama-documentaries” fictionalizing on what might have happened within the United Airlines flight 93 just before it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on 9/11 are among the more prominent themes in the non-linear and multi-crescendi film. The numerous cross-references touch on thematics of politics, religion, radicalism, fantasy, fiction and reenactment.
