The video shows how an artificial ‘kernel’ made of bone is implanted inside the body of a pearl oyster. To protect itself, the oyster will create layers after layers of mother of pearl to cover the intruding object. If the oyster survives this violent operation, many years later the ‘kernel’ will be taken out as an authentic pearl.
