EN: When a work is finished, the artist can see it from the outside, but does so with the experience of the internal creative journey. The artist looks at his own art like the biblical prophet Jonah looks at the whale. Nils Claesson uses his writing to reflect on film and other art forms he practices, looking from an internal artistic perspective as he moves into the whale’s mouth, endures the agony of being swallowed, sits in the whale’s dark stomach, and emerges in a moment of salvation from the depths of the animal. ‘The Ghost Machine’, a doctoral thesis at the Stockholm University of the Arts, is the result of writing from the fractured surface which arises in the gap between the work and the text written about it. This fractured surface creates a doubled image, where both the windings of the text and the layers of the work can be followed, mimicking a geologist’s studies of different sediments. These ways of address and narration are intentionally similar to the author’s documentary novel ‘Blåbärsmaskinen’ (The Blueberry Machine), published in 2009.
