Since the late 1960s at the latest, many people have come to West Germany — and in some cases also to East Germany — from Turkey for political reasons. Among them were students, artists, and individuals fleeing political persecution. This chapter of Turkish-German migration history remains largely unknown and poorly documented.
The third chapter of THE PAST IS NOT ANOTHER COUNTRY focuses on political exile from Turkey and brings together three historical film works that help fill gaps in the archive:
ALAMANYA is a photo film that pairs images of Turkish labor migrants with a song by exiled musician Cem Karaca.
ICH WILL KEINE LIEDER MEHR HÖREN, SINGEN WILL ICH portrays Turkish artists such as composer Tahsin Incirci and painter Hanefi Yeter, who live and work in Berlin.
ULKOMAALAINEN / YABANCI tells the story of a Turkish migrant worker in Helsinki, departing from conventional migration narratives: for the protagonist, the past is not an idealized “homeland,” but a politically charged history that continues to shape life in exile. Brief introductions will provide context for the films.
