A Conversation
BY
Edy Fung

A Conversation explores the intersection between humans, machine learning, and screenwriting using a real dialogue between humans and machines from the early developments of artificial neural networks.

The artwork is composed using texts from a real experiment that Google reported about the training of its Neural Conversation Model on 23 June 2015 (http://arxiv.org/pdf/1506.05869v2.pdf). This model was trained through a movie transcript dataset from OpenSubtitles. Machine (shown in italics) represents Google’s Neural Conversation Model, while Human represents the human actor interacting with it.

Set against an abstract backdrop—an empty, unknown void, the texts unfold with colour changing gradually: a linear transformation in brightness, a cyclical shift in hue, at 25fps. Throughout, the conversation is accompanied by field recordings from NASA’s Golden Record, a collection intended to summarise life on Earth.
