Time Waste
BY
Helena Olsson

It is a short film that takes place in a full-scale model of a bathroom, a recreated copy from a dissertation from 1985. At that time, a female architect investigated how it was possible to build a bathroom that was easier to clean. The researcher started from her own experiences as a parent of small children and the frustration with all the time it took to clean. The research project was conducted with subjects cleaning a test bathroom. The thesis was then ridiculed in the media, questioning whether cleaning could be a topic worth researching, but her results then led to the construction industry changing the Swedish standard for bathrooms. In the film, a cleaning choreography with dancers is shown and their movements are based on the photographs of cleaning from the test subjects that are in the dissertation.

About the artist

Helena Olsson

In Helena’s practice, she works with everyday life and is constantly coming back to being interested in the eternal striving to constantly make your life better and a constant longing for something other than what is here and now. She is interested in utopias; the need for dreams and ideals and how it is portrayed in both individual persons and as part of a structure in the society. How the individual’s needs are often part of a larger structure. Helena works with performance, video and photography and sometimes mix authentic, documentary material with staged material as parts of new stories.
