A young man becomes a republican and pacifist in a monarchy with a vast military budget. He participates in the work of radical groups, but the unwillingness of the political organisations to debate the basic principles disappoints him. And he finally winds up as a painter, preferring the quietness of the museums to the fighting in the streets.
