Role Control
Saskia Holmkvist

Role Control takes its departure in methodical similarities used in interview techniques by linking a job recruitment and a cross examination at the police. To start off with, the actors broach a central theme on its meta-level that forms part of the communication structures and strategies of the talks. By means of a fluent changing of roles within the individual conversations, the protagonists modify their strategies and positions, unexpectedly generating new interactions in the process. The work raises questions relating to the fine line between dialogue and the demonstration of power that may occur in both the private and political levels.

The films Role Control and In Character are linked, but they can also be screened separately.

About the artist

Saskia Holmkvist

Saskia Holmkvist´s work is a long-term research-based practice, where the art-making builds on contextual involvement and is concerned with exploring the limits of translation and how it shapes and forms relations and historical trajectories, in particular on agency. The work combines aspects of ethnography and theatre to create films and performance that relate through past artworks, language, and contested history. Always working with a diverse array of people from a variety of backgrounds, Holmkvist considers these individuals as the main agents of the transformative potential in creating non-linear narratives, suggesting alternative readings or possibilities, juxtaposing documentary with fiction and storytelling. Holmkvist works in a circular mode of connectivity, bringing together themes of historic erasure and limits of translation through critical listening, oral speculation, repetitions into works of performance and film installations.
