En av Gutta (One of the lads)
Mariken Kramer

One of the Lads is about power relations and reflects upon the different kinds of rituals, strategies and codes that emerge in the defining of ‘us’ and ‘the other’. The video refers to the ongoing ‘struggle’ in our lives to be part of something. The feeling of exclusion is painful and our strategies to attain status are often in conflict with our own self-respect. The images that I portray refer to childhood memories of grown up men. In this case, the physical punishments and the psychological humiliations older boys exposed them to as kids or what they did themselves to those lower down on the ‘ladder’. This was a world of blurred borders, where play often was brutal reality.

About the artist

Mariken Kramer

Born in 1972. Based in Oslo, Norway.

Mariken Kramer graduated from Trondheim Academy of Fine Art in 2001. Her projects are largely based on an interest in underlying mechanisms of interpersonal encounters and relationships, as well as the vulnerability of the individual within the social group. She is concerned with psychological and social aspects of that which constitute the individual, as well as how we as individuals perceive and (re)present our identities in relation to the collective that we are part of (or excluded from). Kramers works, whether it is photo, sound pieces or video, are linked thematically and take on social or personal issues related to that of being human among other humans.
