Born in 1973 in Jönköping, Sweden. Lives and works in Stockholm.
Johanna Billing mainly works with video but also produces performances and music events through the label Make it happen. She often addresses political climates and cultural specificities, but more importantly, she transforms, through a documentary method, her filmmaking in a fictive space to examine actual and contrived events and how that filmed compression illuminates their overlap. Her films often involve music, which in her hands becomes a tool for communication, memory and reconstruction.
Recent exhibitions include: Studio Works at Milch Gallery @ Gainsborough Studios, London, the first Prague Biennale; 50th Venice Biennale; the 4th Gwangju Biennale; ‘Vinyl Sky’ at Galleri Intro, Vilnius and ‘Baltic Babel’ at Rooseum, Malmö. Billing participated in the video series ‘It is hard to touch the real’ at Kunstverein München and has most recently been working on the ongoing film and music performance tour You don’t love me yet, 2002-2017.
