The monument commemorating Napoleon III on Place Vendôme in Paris was dismantled by communards during the spring of 1871. Technological development made camera equipment increasingly portable and accessible, which changed the conditions for self-representation of the masses. A number of photographs documenting this intervention in the city’s scenography have since then formed the memories and fantasies of the Paris Commune. On the facades of the buildings surrounding the monument on Place Vendôme, 140 grotesques are placed, faces with various expressions and features carved in stone. However different in appearance, the eyes of each grotesque are turned to the sides, as if to avoid looking at the monument in the centre of the square. Grotesque consists of animated photographs of these allochronic figures.

Sebastian Dahlqvist
Sebastian Dahlqvist (1990, SE) often works with collective memory, urban and social space as well as historical material to confront that which underscores the present. During the last two decades his work has taken the form of exhibitions, theatre plays, editorial work, temporary as well as long-term collectives, educational frameworks such as the course Tusen kulturhus at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and various self-organized institutions. Since 2021 he’s the artistic and executive director at Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus.
Lina Lundquist
Lina Lundquist (b. 1992, SE) works with a variety of materials and mediums and holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (2024). In assemblages of objects and images, her works reflect on materializations of dominant ideologies – multifaceted compounds of elements reflecting the context within which they are produced.
