BOOK:
CURTAIN CALLERS / Ann-Sofi Sidén and Jonathan Bepler
Curtain Callers, 144 p., English Texts: Jörg Heiser, Magdalena Malm, Ann-Sofi Sidén
ISBN:9789197998505, publ. by Art and Theory
Curtain Callers by Ann-Sofi Sidén and Jonathan Bepler
Entering the role, the stage, the theater house. Setting the scene. The actress smoking nervously before the curtain is liftedor is she acting nervous? Curtain Callers studies the machinations of the theater closely and affords the viewer an unobstructed view into institutional theaters every nook and cranny, weaving together and pursuing different themes. Life behind the curtain, the existing, monotonous, clattering, constantly repeating, nervous, insistent life that drives the meeting between stage and audience.
The machine that is institutional theater makes an entrance. In all arenas of the theater, events and processes take place that are like cogs in the huge story-making machinery. A woman in a headscarf and her vacuum cleaner frenetically pick their way through the many rows of seats. Far away in a gilded room bottles are being removed. As if cleaning up after a party. While fingers fasten hair strand by strand into a wig, the corridors, the stage and the antechambers vibrate with expectation. The audience powder their noses in the restrooms and the actors, voice-training for their roles, in their dressing rooms.
Curtain Callers portrays the processes before the charged moment when audience and actor meet. How they, in a quasi-ritualistic way prepare for the encounter with each other. The actors and the audiences spaces are interspersed with stories: written, private and perhaps only rumored. The theater is a never-ending chain of beginnings and endings that reflects humanitys double-edged existence.
The artist Ann-Sofi Sidén and the composer Jonathan Bepler spent half a year observing the work and processes behind the scenes at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm. They invited six hundred choir singers who were then directed to play the role of the audience. By staging and directing them the audiences participatory role in the theater machine is deepened and emphasized.
Parallel to the film Curtain Callers, Ann-Sofi Sidén created the video installation Curtain Callers (Entracte), a five-channel video installation in a semi-circular format with surround sound by Jonathan Bepler. According to the artist herself, the two versions are of great importance to each other.
The one takes over where the other ends, says Ann-Sofi Sidén.
The title Curtain Callers came about late in the process and refers to the loaded moment at the end of a performance when the actors are applauded and step out from behind the curtain, the artist explains, adding that the term, like the moment itself, is full of built-in ambiguity about who it is that is the main attractionis it the actor, director, make-up artist, tailor or even the audience? Who is thanking whom?
In the book Curtain Callers (Art and Theory, 2012) a new version of the project is created, translating Ann-Sofi Sidéns characteristic narrative technique from film to stills and text.
Here the artwork itself makes an appearance in the form of the narrative voice, Curt, in Jörg Heisers text, as an answer to the narrative flow of the film. The book contains a text by Ann-Sofi Sidén and an interview conducted by Magdalena Malm with Ann-Sofi Sidén and Jonathan Bepler.

- U-BARN, Öyvind Fahlström, 1968 (DVD)
OEI editör in collaboration with Amundön presents the first dvd edition of Öyvind Fahlström’s short film U-BARN from 1968. This edition also includes three booklets with an essay on Fahlström’s relation to film (in fact the first more comprehensive essay on this subject), an interview with Stefan Jarl (who was production manager for U-BARN), and transcriptions in Swedish and English of the dialogue track in the film, as well as images and docu- ments related to Fahlström’s film productions in Sweden.
“[U-BARN] was based on a few simple things: combining some forms of societal imprinting through education and advertisement, some educational situations and an old commercial. And then genetic imprinting, i.e., handicaps of some kind, and show how children behave in a class situation in that case. But some facts about LSD are included and some voices that happen to be me and another person talking about the effects of it and they are combined with images of that kind, from therapeutic experiments at a mental hospital. For a long time it remains on a kind of immobile, introverted plane with different levels of consciousness, and then there is the breakout, that is the outwardly activating insight, the story of the crown prince and the draft.” (Fahlström interviewed by Leif Nylén and Mats G. Bengtsson in Paletten # 3 1968.)
While well-known for his inventive and various visual art (paintings, collages, installations), for his concrete poetry and his “concretist” manifesto “Hätila ragulpr på fåtskliaben” (“HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY”) from 1953, and, at least in some contexts, for his radio art, happenings, and plays, Fahlström’s relation to film belongs to the more unexplored territo- ries of his multifarious work. Even so, film was part of his aesthetic interests from the very beginning, and it was an interest that would linger on during the decades to come. Eventually, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, it would also result in the production of a handful of films, of which the most well-known is perhaps Du gamla, du fria (“Provocation”) from 1972. U-BARN, though, is Fahlström’s most experimental and complex film, why we are very happy to be able to make it available to a Swedish as well as an international audience.
The dialogue in U-BARN is extremely literal and embedded in specific con- texts of learning and protest. As a conventional subtitling would be impos- sible due to Fahlström’s highly complex sound work, which actively resists a normalizing treatment, we have chosen to publish the dialogue track as a transcription in a separate booklet (in Swedish as well as in English).

The last supper has been given to prisoners facing the death penalty as long as the punishment has existed. The tradition stems from funeral rites where the deceased person was given food on his deathbed to protect him on his journey to the afterlife. Today, the ritual of giving the last supper to the condemned person has been detached from its origin, and can be perceived to be as absurd as the punishment it accompanies.
Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström's film "Last Supper" focuses on this discrepancy between historical "meaning" and contemporary use of a tradition that has lost its connection with the past. The film mixes documentary material with sculptural installations and animated graphics. The main character is the former death row chef Brian Price, who reconstructs one of the 200 final meals that he prepared during his time as inmate in Huntsville State Prison, Texas, US. The film was shot during 2004 in the US, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Kenya, South Africa and Sweden.
Bigert and Bergström are two Swedish artists based in Stockholm. They have collaborated since the early 90s and have participated in numerous art exhibitions around the world. Their main focus is complex installations and film projects where urgent social and scientifically questions are examined from unexpected angles.

"I discovered how beautiful things look through the camera... A melon or dirty dishes, seen with a lens in close-up were translated into something else... The camera became like binoculars; you zero in on a small area and isolate it, and it becomes more precious because it's selected." (Holmlund, 78)
"Schmeerguntz is one long raucous belch in the face of the American Home. A society which hides its animal functions beneath a shiny public surface deserves to have such films as Schmeerguntz shown everywhere – in every PTA, every Rotary Club, every club in the land. For it is brash enough, brazen enough and funny enough to purge the soul of every harried American married woman." – Ernest Callenbach, Film Quarterly
"My Name is Oona captures in haunting, intensely lyrical images fragments of the coming to consciousness of a child girl. A series of extremely brief flashes of her moving through night-lit space or woods in sensuous negative, separated by rapid fades into blackness, burst upon us like a fairy-tale princess, with a late sun only partially outlining her and the animal in silvery filigree against the encroaching darkness; one of the most perfect recent examples of poetic cinema." – Amos Vogel, The Village Voice
"Moons Pool is a masterful and lyrical use of the film medium to portray the search for identity and resolution of self. Photographed under water, live bodies are intercut with natural landscapes creating powerful mood changes and images surfaced from the unconscious." - Freude Bartlett

Art as Moving Image, from Diagonal Symphony to Whiteout describes the history of Swedish avant-garde and experimental film, from 1924 until today. The book contains a DVD with Swedish experimental film The rest is only in swedish:

Rut Hillarp. Dagboken - i urval av Birgitta Holm / Birgitta Holm
Svenska, 376 sid, Atlantis 2011
